Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills is an assessment that is utilized to evaluate your child's reading growth and reading skills. This particular assessment is one indicator to identify students that may require additional reading support and to determine reading growth over a period of time. The DIBELS assessments are not part of your child's reading grade. The first grade students will be benchmark assessed three times during the academic school year and progress monitored every three to four weeks to determine each student's needs. The first grade students participate in the following assessments:
Letter Naming Fluency (LNF): This assessment measures a child's ability to correctly identify and name uppercase and lowercase letters in random order.
Phoneme Segmentation Fluency (PSF): This assessment measures a child's ability to segment three or four phoneme words into individual phonemes fluently. Example: cat /c/ /a/ /t/
Nonsense Word Fluency (NFW): This assessment measures a child's ability to produce the correct sounds for a cvc (consonant, vowel, consonant) nonsense word. The child is asked to correctly read as many nonsense words in a one minute timed session. Example: nez
Oral Reading Fluency (ORF): This assessment measures a child's oral reading fluency rate and accuracy rate. Fluency rate is the number of correct words read in a one minute timed session. *This assessment is not administered till spring.
