Dear First Grade Parent(s),
As you are aware the first grade students have been participating in the Rocket Math program for the last few weeks. The students have adjusted well to the program and to our routine. During Rocket Math, your child is paired with a classmate and they each practice the addition facts around the outside of the sheet by stating the addition fact and sum. Your child practices stating the addition facts and the sums for two solid minutes while their partner is listening attentively with a key answer sheet, then the students switch roles. It is important for students to state the addition fact and sum rather than just the sum (answer), students will memorize the addition fact more quickly along with the reversal addition sentence. An example: 1+2=3 2+1=3
The students have been taking a Speed Writing Test two to three times each week to become familiar with writing numbers quickly. Last Thursday, the students participated in the final step of Rocket Math by completing the one minute timed fact test; this particular test was a practice test. I feel that it is important for the students to be comfortable with all of the steps in Rocket Math before the timed test counts towards moving to Level B of Rocket Math. Students are expected to write the sum to as many as addition facts as possible in a one-minute timed session. In order to move to Level B, students will need to complete 25 facts within one minute. The students will take two more practice tests this week. On Wednesday, the timed test will count towards moving to Level B. Please review the addition facts with your child. If you have any questions or comments regarding Rocket Math, I will be happy to answer any questions.
Your child is practicing the following four facts for Level A:
1+2=3
2+1=3
1+3=4
3+1=4
Thank you for your continued support,
Mrs. Buckley
