Rocket Math Program
Dear First Grade Parent(s),
Rocket Math is a program designed to learn and memorize basic addition facts with classmates in a fun way. To begin preparing for Rocket Math, the students will take a Speed Writing Test two to three times each week to become familiar with writing numbers quickly. Once, the students are familiar with the process of the program, the first grade students will begin particpating in the Rocket Math program. During Rocket Math, your child is paired with a classmate and they each practice the addition facts around the outside of the sheet by stating the addition fact and sum. Your child practices stating the addition facts and the sums for two solid minutes while their partner is listening attentively with an answer key sheet, then the students switch roles. It is important for students to state the addition fact and sum rather than just the sum (answer), students will memorize the addition fact more quickly along with the reversal addition sentence. An example: 1+2=3 2+1=3
All students will begin on Level A, students are expected to write the sum to as many addition facts as possible in a one-minute timed session. In order to move to Level B, students will need to complete 25 facts within one minute.
Your child will be practicing the following four facts for Level A:
1+2=3
2+1=3
1+3=4
3+1=4
Please know that your child is ONLY in competition with themselves and that their Rocket Math scores are not counted towards their math grade. If you have any questions or comments regarding Rocket Math, I will be happy to answer any questions.
Thank you for your continued support,
Mrs. Buckley
