On Tuesday, the first grade students will be assessed in reading using the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) assessment. The first grade students will be benchmark assessed three times during the academic school year and progress monitored monthly. Your child will be assessed on the following areas for their beginning of year benchmark assessments:
Letter Naming Fluency (LNF) Assessment:
Students are presented with a page of uppercase and lowercase letters and are asked to state the name of the letter, this is a one-minute timed session.
Nonsense Word Fluency (NWF) Assessment:
The development and growth your child possesses with nonsense word fluency helps him/her to become a stronger and more fluent decoder. An example of a nonsense word: zaj; the students are asked to pronounce each individual sound and then blend and pronounce the entire nonsense word. Students are presented with a page of CVC (consonant, vowel, consonant) nonsense words and are asked to read as many as they can correctly in a one-minute timed session.
Phoneme Segmentation Fluency (PSF) Assessment:
During the phoneme segmentation assessment, students listen to the teacher pronounce words, the student is asked to state all of the correct sounds in the spoken word. Example word: smile, /s/ /m/ /i/ /l/, the student would pronounce each individual sound in the spoken word. This assessment measures a child's ability to segment three and four phoneme words into individual phonemes fluently. This is a good predictor of later reading achievement.
You will receive a copy of your child's DIBELS assessment scores.
